Helping Your Child Adjust to a New School
Moving is stressful for adults. There is so much to do and consider, there is little
time to consider the effects moving and starting a new school has on children. Regardless of their age, children need the help of their parents to adjust and thrive in new school and new environment. Here are a few points to remember for helping your child no matter what age:
- Show your child your new home and their new room prior to moving day. If this is not possible, ease the child into the idea of moving with pictures and videos to help them visualize where they are going.
- Assure children that you will not forget about their friends.
- Make a scrapbook of the old home, old neighborhood and their friends.
- Throw a good-bye party. At the party, have friends sign a t-shirt.
- Have your child write good-bye letters to friends, enclosing their new address.
- When packing, give your child his or her own moving box for embellishing with decorations.
- Start a scrapbook for your new home.
- Visit your child's new school, park, church with camera in hand.
- Let your child choose a new favorite restaurant to help them feel more in control of their new environment.
- Encourage your child to send letters to friends about their new home.
- Involve your child in the same type of groups, sports, church and activities as in the prior home.
- Keep in mind that though you only lived in the home a few years, to the child it's like a lifetime.
